Volunteering FAQ’s

1) I’ve already signed up to volunteer, but no one contacted me yet.

If you haven’t heard back from us 5 days after you signed up, please e-mail us immediately:

2) Do I have to be a registered voter to gather signatures?

You have to be a registered voter in California  to gather signatures. To register to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old. But you don’t have to be a citizen to join our Campaign Team! (See #3 below.)

3) I’m not a registered voter. What can I do as a Campaign Team member? What other ways can I get involved?

We need all the help we can get! The Campaign Team members assist our regional office staff with phone banking and research. We also need you to “table” at events to answer general questions and sign up new volunteers! (Note: individuals under the age of 18 years old or not U.S. citizens may not collect signatures on the petition). To get started, email us at info@californiaagainstslavery.org

Other ways to get involved:

  • Research locations, events, festivals, conferences, and religious organizations that would be great places to gather signatures! Email us with details at info@californiaagainstslavery.org
  • Organize a volunteer training! Get a group together that wants to learn more and get involved, and we’ll bring a comprehensive training to you! Email us to get started at info@californiaagainstslavery.org
  • Fundraise! Host a house party to raise awareness, gather signatures, and raise funds!

4) I don’t want to stand in front of the store to ask strangers for signatures. Can I volunteer in other ways?

Yes! Join our Campaign Team! Please see #3 above.  Keep in mind that most people are not naturally comfortable with asking strangers for signatures. But once they are trained and get the support from a local team, they realize that it is not as intimidating than it sounds. Talk to one of our staff about training.
